m+ culture: These are the shows we are staying in for this Autumn
As the post-summer haze sets in, cosy nights on the sofa start to feel less like a guilty pleasure and more like a seasonal ritual.
This autumn’s line-up is particularly strong — with buzzy new dramas and much-anticipated returns that are well worth staying in for.
Black Rabbit – Season 1
Netflix – September 18
When the owner of NYC’s biggest hotspot played by Jude Law allows his troubled brother, Jason Bateman, to return to the family business, trouble multiplies. Netflix’s latest gritty drama follows a man pulled back into the criminal world he tried to escape.
Tense, character-driven, and impossible to watch just one episode at a time this one will have you wanting to debrief after every episode.
Slow Horses – Season 5
Apple TV+ – September 24
This quick-witted spy drama follows a dysfunctional team of MI5 agents—and their obnoxious boss, the notorious Jackson Lamb—as they navigate the espionage world’s smoke and mirrors to defend England from sinister forces.
Based on the espionage novel of the same name by Mick Herron, Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas and the Slough House misfits are back — and if the last four seasons are anything to go by, expect razor-sharp writing, laugh-out-loud insults, and espionage thrills. A perfect mid-week watch that drops weekly.
Riot Women – Season 1
BBC Three / iPlayer – October
From Sally Wainwright, the creator, writer and director of Happy Valley - A teacher, a police officer, a pub landlady, a midwife, and a shoplifting freeloader: five menopausal women form a punk rock band to take part in a local talent contest, and suddenly find they have a lot more to shout about than they ever imagined.
As they become closer, the teacher, Beth, and freeloader, Kitty, discover a surprising, heart breaking connection.
Equal parts rebellious and uplifting, this new series explores the lives of female activists navigating love, ambition, and friendship in a world that still underestimates them. The mood? Bold, unapologetic, and perfect for Sunday night viewing.
Landman – Season 2
Paramount+ – November 16
On paper you may not think the life of a Texas oil field will grip you with clever plotlines, dark humour and cowboy hats, but trust us you will get into this and be hooked.
From the co-creator of Yellowstone and starring Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore, this West Texas oil drama returns for Season 2 in mid-November. Bringing back family feuds, power struggles, and showing all that glitters isn’t gold this is one we are really excited about.
Haven’t seen Season 1 yet? Now’s the time — this one deserves a proper binge before diving into the new episodes.
