The May Fair Hotel's Children's Afternoon Tea Is a Treat for the Whole Family

An afternoon tea where children feel just as welcome as the grown-ups.

There's something wonderfully indulgent about afternoon tea, but it's not always the first thing that springs to mind with children in tow, however, The May Fair Hotel might just change that.

Served in the chic surroundings of May Fair Kitchen, the Children's Afternoon Tea runs alongside the traditional menu rather than sitting apart from it, so it feels like a shared experience rather than a children's alternative. Better still, it strikes that difficult balance of feeling special enough for adults while remaining genuinely welcoming to younger guests.

My daughter and I visited on a Friday afternoon, and from the moment we arrived, everything felt easy. Our dietary requirements were accommodated without hesitation, and every member of staff spoke to her as though she were the guest of honour. Children weren't simply catered for here; they were treated as valued guests in their own right.

The children's menu is packed with familiar favourites alongside a few treats that make the occasion feel memorable. The classic sandwich selection disappeared quickly, but it was the cakes and desserts that stole the show. The mandarin and cinnamon silk mousse brûlée became an instant favourite, while the Charbonnel et Walker truffles added an extra touch of occasion. She also declared the hot chocolate one of the best she'd ever tasted.

For me, the Wild Idol pairing was a welcome addition alongside the traditional Champagne option. Whether you're driving, pregnant or simply choosing not to drink, it feels every bit as celebratory. The sandwiches were beautifully made, the chai was excellent, and the chocolate hazelnut mousse with dulce de leche and Madagascan vanilla was the standout from the patisserie selection.

What stayed with me most was the atmosphere. Despite its Mayfair postcode, there was nothing intimidating about it. Every table around us seemed completely relaxed, and the restaurant managed to feel polished without ever feeling formal. The portions are generous too; we left happily full and didn't need dinner afterwards.

If you're celebrating a birthday, looking for a memorable school holiday treat, or simply want an afternoon that feels a little different from the usual family outing, The May Fair has found that rare balance: an experience that's just as enjoyable for adults as it is for children.

The Children's Afternoon Tea is served at May Fair Kitchen, Stratton Street, Thursday to Sunday from 12.30pm to 4pm, with traditional, vegetarian, vegan and children's menus available priced from £32.00. Book a table here.
