How Matcha x Kumori pop up
London’s dining scene gets a dose of Tokyo cool this month, courtesy of a matcha bar turned late-night handroll spot.
Marylebone’s cult café How Matcha! has teamed up with Kumori, the much-hyped Japanese handroll bar opening in Soho next year, to bring the city its first walk-in handroll bar — and it sounds like the perfect mix of food, music and late-night energy.
Running Monday to Wednesday evenings from 17 November, the one-month residency will transform the café into a low-lit counter experience led by chef Jan Horak (formerly of Beaverbrook Townhouse’s Fuji Grill).
Think handrolls made fresh to order, served à la carte, and filled with the kind of ingredients that Kumori is renowned for — tuna with torched bone marrow, salmon belly finished with matcha salt, and a few playful surprises in between.
It’s not just about the food, though. The vibe is very much Tokyo via Marylebone — expect DJ sets, warm lighting, and a cultural experience for the senses.
If the name Kumori rings a bell, it might be because their first pop-up went viral during the Monaco F1 Grand Prix earlier this year. The brand brings a fashion-forward edge to traditional Japanese dining, and its upcoming Soho flagship (opening 2026) is already creating serious levels of excitement.
For now, this collaboration is your first taste. Bookings open 1 November for parties of 2–6, but walk-ins are very much encouraged — so whether it’s a spontaneous midweek plan or a post-bedtime escape, this one deserves a spot on your November list.
